Azithromycin is a broad-based antibiotic and is used effectively against a variety of bacterial infections occurring in the lungs and airways [bronchitis, or pneumonia]; infections of the nasal passages/sinuses or throat [sinusitis, pharyngitis, or tonsillitis]; skin and soft tissue infections; ear infections of the middle ear [otitis media]; mild to moderate typhoid; and is also used to treat chlamydia – a common sexually-transmitted infection.
Zithromax usually taken once a day. Adhere to the dosage prescribed by your physician . Take the capsules/tablets/suspension as advised by the treating doctor. Finish the entire course of the medicine even if you feel better, else the infection will return. The suspension can be taken with or without food. Measure the liquid with the special measuring spoon meant for such medicines.
Most people who take this medicine have minor, or no side effects. The common side effects are
• Nausea, or Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain.

You should stop using this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, or any other unusual symptoms occur, such as

• Rash, or Itching
• Dizziness, or Fainting
• Inflammation of the vagina
• Taste, or Hearing disturbances
• Convulsions
• Thrush infections
• Anemia
• Palpitation, or Arrhythmias
• Anxiety, or Agitation
• Pins and needles sensation.

It should be stored at a room temperature of 15oC-30oC, away from dampness, heat and light. The suspension should be kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator [not in the freezer]. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard unused medicine after 10 days.
It should not be taken together with Statins, Ergotamine/related medicines, Anticoagulants [Warfarin], Oral Birth Control pills, Oral Typhoid vaccine, Cyclosporine/Digoxin/Quetiapine/Theophylline, Nelfinavir, or any Antacids.
Since it’s a single dose, you are not likely to miss it; in case you do, try to take it as soon as you remember, but do not double your dose.
• Before taking Zithromax, inform your physician about your medical history, and also about all the medicines – OTC and prescription [including all nutritional supplements/vitamins/ minerals/herbal products] you are taking, and any allergies you have to food/medicine/preservatives/dyes/animals. Especially tell the doctor if you ever had any kidney or liver disease, cystic fibrosis, problem of irregular heartbeats, or HIV.

• Inform your doctor if you are taking Anticoagulants, Cyclosporine, Digoxin, Dihydroergotamine, Ergotamine, Nelfinavir, Terfenadine, or medications that suppress the immune system, for your doctor may change the dose of these medicines, and will advise you to space them at a different time from Azithromycin.

• Let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or lactating. Those who are taking Oral Birth Control pills may not be given Azithromycin, as it can decrease the effect of Birth Control pills and cause an unwanted pregnancy.

• Those who have to take the Oral Typhoid vaccine, should take it at least 3 days after finishing the course of Zithromax.

• It should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after taking any antacid.

• Children who weigh under 45kg should be given only the suspension, and not the capsules.
• Discard this medicine [any left-over] if it is not needed after 10 days – consult your pharmacist on how to discard it properly.
• Never share your medicine with anyone else.
