Treat Stomach Ulcers with Misoprostol

Stomach ulcer or peptic ulcer is a term which is used to refer to ulcers of the stomach, esophagus and duodenum. Ulcers are sores, abrasions or lesions, caused due to the erosion of the mucosal lining. Stomach ulcers can develop on the walls of the stomach, the lower part of the esophagus or the duodenum. While stomach ulcers are termed gastric ulcers, ulcers of the esophagus and duodenum are called esophageal and duodenal ulcers respectively.

Stomach Ulcers Symptoms:

Abdominal pain is amongst the most common symptoms of stomach ulcers. The pain is often sharp, and burning as well as gnawing in nature. This pain, which is called episodic epigastric pain, can occur anywhere between the navel and the lower part of the breast bone. In some patients, this pain might last for a few hours, while others might experience pain for only a few minutes. In the case of gastric ulcers, the pain turns worse with consumption of food, while the pain caused due to duodenal ulcers develops when the stomach is empty. Sometimes, the pain might disappear for a few days or perhaps weeks, but returns later.

Sometimes, due to the perforation of the stomach, duodenal wall or esophagus by ulcers, the condition can result in peritonitis or inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach and requires urgent medical attention.

Other symptoms of stomach ulcers include indigestion, heartburn, burping, constant discomfort in the stomach, nausea, abdominal bloating, vomiting, etc. Symptoms of severe peptic ulcers include frequent sharp pain in the stomach, anemia, bloody stools, blood in vomit, light-headedness, etc.

Causes for Stomach Ulcers:

There are several factors that can lead to stomach ulcers. These factors include stress, smoking, spicy food, frequent use of some medications like, NSAIDs, helicobacter pylori infection, excessive alcohol consumption, etc. Research states that bacterial infections or prolonged use of certain medications are amongst the most common causes for stomach ulcers. Stomach ulcers can also develop when the inner lining of the stomach is damaged due to acid imbalance.

Stomach ulcers can be caused due to bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori. The bacterium enters the body through contaminated food or water. Earlier, it was thought that ulcers are only caused due to factors like; stress, spicy food, use of certain medications, smoking, etc. However, recent studies have revealed that more than 80% of stomach ulcers are caused due to helicobacter pylori infections and the remaining 20% are caused due to the other factors mentioned above. However, you can treat stomach ulcers with Misoprostol, a Gastro Health medication that has proven very effective in treating the condition.

The type of medication for stomach ulcers depends upon the cause of the ulcer. For instance, depending on whether the ulcers are caused due to the Helicobacter pylori bacteria or are due to a rise in the acid levels in the stomach, different medications will be required. Earlier, surgery was the only method used for treating stomach ulcers. However, these days surgery is only used in severe cases.

Generic Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin, which is used to effectively prevent and also treat peptic ulcers, gastric ulcers; for prophylaxis of NSAIDs induced ulcers and ulcers caused due to certain medications. Misoprostol has a cytoprotective as well as anti-secretory effect upon the mucosal lining of the stomach which makes it an extremely effective medication for the prevention as well as treatment of stomach ulcers. It is commonly prescribed for patients who need to use NSAIDs for long durations because the risk of peptic ulcers is very high amongst patients using NSAIDs. Misoprostol also helps to heal ulcers that have worsened due to excessive alcohol and smoking. However, it is recommended that you consult a doctor before deciding to treat stomach ulcers with Misoprostol.

Lasix and Hypertension

Hypertension is a disorder causing elevated levels of blood pressure. Hypertension is called a silent killer because patients suffering from it do not exhibit any obvious symptoms. This condition is usually detected after several years when the persistently high level of blood pressure has already caused lot of damage to the vital organs. If the blood pressure is not controlled properly by using good antihypertensive drugs, it can cause thickening of the myocardium resulting in hypertensive cardiomyopathy.

It can also cause damage to the blood vessels in the eyes, the brain and the kidneys causing severe complications such as reduced vision, cerebrovascular stroke and renal failure respectively. Lasix is a very good drug that patients can use for keeping the blood pressure at a normal level. Proper use of this drug can also help in preventing the complications of this disorder.

Types of hypertension:

There are 2 broad categories of hypertension; primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension is more common. Almost 95% of the patients suffering from high blood pressure fall in this category. It can occur due to the interplay of multiple factors. Secondary hypertension accounts for 5% of the patients of this condition. As the name suggests, this type of hypertension occurs due to a specific abnormality in any organ or system in the body.

Causes of hypertension:

  • Heredity
  • High salt diet
  • Obesity
  • Pre-existence of other disorders like diabetes and hypercholesterolemia
  • Mental stress
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • Smoking
  • Alcoholism
  • High intake of caffeine

Symptoms of hypertension:

The nature of this disease is such that it does not produce any obvious symptoms during the initial period. But, it may cause sudden fatal complications due to the slowly progressing damage occurring in the arteries supplying blood to the vital organs of the body. Some non-specific, but common symptoms of hypertension are; frequent headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness and blurring of vision. These symptoms, though not very specific to hypertension, should certainly alert a patient about the possibility of hypertension. It is advisable to check the blood pressure at regular intervals, especially after the age of 40 years, so that the disease can be diagnosed early.

Use of Hypertension Medicines such as Generic Lasix can be highly beneficial for patients suffering from hypertension. It is a diuretic. This medicine helps by increasing the excretion of salt via urination. Along with salt, there is also an increase in the excretion of water from the body. Due to the loss of water, the fluid overload in the body is reduced, which in turn, decreases the pressure exerted by the blood along the walls of the arteries. This helps in reducing the blood pressure. The effects of Lasix and Hypertension on the body work in opposite directions. Hypertension is caused by an increased pressure in the arteries whereas Lasix helps in reducing this pressure. Hence, it can be said that Lasix is the best remedy for the management of hypertension. Patients can take it in a dose of 40 mg, twice in a day. The dose can be adjusted depending upon the blood pressure levels. The recommended dose of Lasix for pediatric patients is 2 mg per Kg body weight, in a day.

Herbs For Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are usually bluish purple in color. Normally, small, one-way valves within the veins ensure that the blood only flows towards the heart. However, in some people, these valves weaken and blood collects in the veins and causes them to enlarge. Varicose veins are most commonly seen on the legs, because the leg veins must work against gravity and standing increases pressure on the leg veins.

Varicose veins can be just a cosmetic concern in some people, but it can cause swelling, pain, or heaviness in others. It could also be a sign of circulatory disorders or heart disease. If not treated, varicose veins could lead to other serious complications such as skin ulcers, phlebitis or inflammation of the veins, and blood clots.

Causes of Varicose Veins:

  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause.
  • Genetics
  • Being overweight, which increases the pressure on veins.
  • Prolonged standing
  • Chronic constipation

Considering the effectiveness of herbal supplements, many people are turning to herbal supplements and creams to treat varicose veins. As opposed to laser treatment and sclerotheraphy, herbal remedies aim to address the root cause of the problem such as weak vein walls and valves. Herbs help strengthen the vein walls, increase flexibility, improve blood micro-circulation and normalize vein permeability.

Herbs for Varicose Veins:

Grape Seed and Pine Bark: The extracts of grape seeds and pine bark include oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes, antioxidants that make the connective tissue structure of the blood vessels stronger and reduce inflammation. The Grape seed extract is rich in antioxidants that help protect the cells against harmful free radicals. It has been effectively used to improve circulation, prevent blood clots and increase skin elasticity. Grape seed extracts help treat vascular or vein conditions like spider veins and varicose veins, in addition to improving vision and maintaining a healthy heart. However, people with autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis should not take pine bark or grapeseed extract without first consulting the doctor.

Butcher’s broom: This herb contains ruscogenins which help to strengthen collagen in the blood vessel walls as well as improve circulation. This in turn strengthens weak and stretched vessels like those associated with varicose veins.

Japanese pagoda tree: Extracts of the Japanese pagoda tree are some of the most effective herbs for vein health. They are thought to enhance vein and capillary stability, reduce inflammation, and normalize permeability. Japanese pagoda tree extracts have also been shown to improve blood micro-circulation.

Horse chestnut: The extract derived from the seeds of the prickly horse chestnut fruit has been used for many years to treat vein conditions like varicose veins and spider veins. Horse chestnut extract helps reduce inflammation and improves the vein wall tone to facilitate blood flow back to the heart. It fixes microscopic leaks in tiny veins and capillaries, strengthens the vein walls, promotes elasticity, and prevents swelling. An active ingredient in horse chestnut called aescin blocks the release of enzymes which damage the capillary walls. However, whole horse chestnut is considered to be unsafe by the FDA as it could cause nausea, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Although these herbs help deal with varicose veins, certain allopathic medications like Herbal Pilex can also prove beneficial, available at online pharmacy. Pilex helps reduce the engorgement and turgidity of veins and venous capillaries. It relieves hepatic congestion and portal pressure, thus playing a facilitatory role in hepatic disorders linked with venous congestion. Its anti-infective and anti-inflammatory properties reduce inflammation and promote healing. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor before using this medication or any of the herbal medicines mentioned above.

She was often seen staring out of the widow of her house with a blank look on her face. She suffered from postpartum blues and it was so severe that she felt that she did not want to live anymore. She could not come to terms with the challenges of motherhood. This was the most troublesome period of her life. For the first time in her life, she battled the emotional turmoil with feelings of helplessness and despair. She was very sad and withdrew from her family, which was very strange considering her nature. She suffered from thoughts of suicide and feelings of failure. Many women go through this phase after delivering their baby. They find it hard to accept the new role of motherhood, which brings a lot of challenges and responsibilities along with it. To-be-mothers and their relatives need to understand the postpartum depression symptoms, treatment and medicines in order to prevent severe complications.

Causes and risk factors of postpartum depression

  • Hormonal changes in the body during and after pregnancy are the main culprits behind postpartum depression. After the delivery, there is a reduction in the production of estrogen and progesterone in the body. This causes intense fatigue and depression in the female. There is also a drop in blood pressure and metabolic rate after the delivery that can lead to postpartum depression.
  • Apart from this, the woman has to cope with the pain of delivery that thoroughly exhausts her. There are also worries about losing the excess weight gained during pregnancy, loss of physical attractiveness and changes in lifestyle. The last one is more difficult for first time mothers. They find it hard to adjust their routine with that of the new born baby. The baby takes time to develop its own biological clock. But it is very taxing for new mothers to adjust to the round-the-clock needs of the baby.
  • Some new mothers are too anxious and worried. They are not sure about their capability to take care of the baby in a proper way and tend to be on their toes all the time with the fear that the baby may need them anytime. This takes a toll on their physical and psychological heath and these females slowly slip into postpartum depression.

Signs and symptoms of postpartum depression

  • Mood Swings
  • Sadness
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Crying jags
  • Anxiety over the slightest matter
  • Lack of interest or negative feelings for the baby
  • Tension about not taking proper care of the baby
  • Lack of motivation and energy
  • Feeling of guilt or worthlessness
  • Loss of pleasure
  • Lack of self concern
  • Suicidal thoughts

If these symptoms are found in a mother within 6 – 8 months of delivering the baby, a diagnosis of postpartum depression can be made. A timely diagnosis and treatment of the mother can bring her and the baby lot of happiness and she can thoroughly enjoy her motherhood.

She can be treated with various forms of therapy like hormonal preparations, psychotherapy, marriage counseling, antidepressants medicines and family education. Counseling of the female during pregnancy can prevent the occurrence postpartum depression later on. Couples are advised to seek the help of a psychologist during pregnancy itself to understand the causes and symptoms of postpartum depression. This helps the mother to prepare herself mentally for the new challenges and she can welcome the baby with open arms.

The Padma Lakshmi Scar Story

padma lakshmi scarThe supermodel and a celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi told the story of how she got that 7 inches long scar on the arm. She made the world know how the scar appeared on her otherwise flawless body. She revealed that she had met with a car accident when she was just 14 years old. The accident was very bad and she had to struggle very hard to come out of the car. However, in an effort to get out of the car, she got some injuries over the body and one of those injuries resulted in this scar on her forearm. The scar, that is 7 inches in length, keeps reminding her about the dreadful accident and her struggle against it. Initially, she was quite conscious of that scar. She used to stand in front of the mirror and try different poses to hide the scar. The confident model initially tried to hide the scar. But, today, she has accepted that the scar is a part of her and it is a symbol of her struggle and survival. She is confident enough not to hide the scar from anyone. The Padma Lakshmi scar story has become a benchmark of courage for everyone in the modeling industry where the smallest of flaws can end careers.

However, there are many others who may have had an accident, perhaps worse than the one Padma Lakshmi had, who do not want accident scars on their body. They would like to seek treatment for those scars especially when they are over more visible areas like the face. Some forms of therapies for accident scars are given below –

  • Chemical peels: These are chemical substances that destroy the epidermal matter in a controlled fashion. This causes exfoliation of the scar area and reduces the visibility of it. The choice of chemicals depends upon the depth of the scar and the patient’s sensitivity to these chemicals.
  • Filler injections: Injections of collagen are used in atrophic scars to raise them till the level of the normal skin. However, there is a risk of allergic reaction and further disfigurement in this.
  • Dermabrasion: It involves abrasion or removal of the superficial surface of the skin with the help of local anesthesia.
  • Laser treatment: Abrasive lasers can be very effective in atrophic scars after accidents, just like dermabrasion. Non-ablative laser treatment may be used for hypertrophic scars as well as for keloid formation after accidents. It helps to make the skin smooth by heating and distributing collagen, at the same time avoiding damage to epidermal area. This requires several sessions for better results.
  • Radiotherapy: Superficial radiotherapy in low doses helps in cases of hypertrophic scars and keloids and also prevents repeated attacks of them. Several ugly scars after accidents can be successfully removed by radiation.
  • Steroids: Severe cases of accident scars require local steroidal injections under the supervision of expert health practitioner. They are specifically useful in hypertrophic scars.

The steroidal injection is administered directly into the scar to avoid the systemic side effects of steroids. The procedure should be repeated at an interval of 4-5 weeks for better results.

  • Surgical intervention: Some scars need to be surgically removed by performing excision. A combination of treatment with surgery and laser treatment can give very effective and permanent results.

The story of Padma Lakshmi’s scar has taught everyone to fight any circumstances. It is a lesson to those unfortunate individuals who had to face bad accidents, and are living with scars on their body. She has proved that there’s no need to be ashamed of the scars of experience. However, people can have relief, as various modes of treatment are available to them to get rid of the scars, in case they wish to.

US Agencies Work Hard To Cope With Methotrexate Shortages Across The Country

Many doctors, patients and also U.S. agencies are on edge due to the shortage of certain lifesaving drugs. It is reported that doctors are facing an acute shortage of a chemotherapy drug, Methotrexate, which is a commonly used medication for treating cancer in children and also in adults. The agencies are scrambling to see that the supplies are secured. Even the patients and their families are left puzzled as to why these medicines, which have been available over several years, are suddenly unavailable. Many patient-advocacy groups are demanding Congressional action so that the regulatory and economic issues leading to this problem can be handled immediately. Because of the urgency, US Agencies work hard to cope with Methotrexate shortages across the country to avoid delays in the recovery of many cancer patients.

Methotrexate Cancer Medicine

Methotrexate is a drug used for chemotherapy in children suffering from lymphoblastic leukemia. It is also essential for treating bone cancer. Methotrexate came as a great boon, offering hope to children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The drug could cure the disease with a success rate of 85%. However, the shortage of Methotrexate has now left the patients in the lurch. Due to the unavailability of Methotrexate, many physicians are forced to use other less effective drugs for their patients. In many parts of the country, the treatment of cancer patients has been halted. In some hospitals, physicians are trying hard to cope with the issue by changing the treatment plan of their patients.

The shortage of Methotrexate has probably come about due to the shut down of its production by Ben Venue Laboratories Inc. at the Bedford, Ohio, manufacturing complex, in November, after FDA expressed its concerns about the product safety.

The root of the problem can also be traced back to the backlog of several applications pending with the FDA. Although many drug manufacturers had submitted their applications for the production of this drug, the agency did not have financial support for reviewing the applications and for inspecting the factories. The matter was aggravated as most of the applicants’ factories were located abroad. Apart from this; the manufacturers of such generic drugs are not very enthusiastic about expanding their production of these drugs, which are not used by a large population, because such drugs do not fetch much profit for them.

The FDA has been trying to deal with drug shortages by encouraging the manufacturers to issue a warning regarding an impending shortage. The FDA has commented that it has averted a shortage of several medications after President Barack Obama signed an order emphasizing the need for early notification of shortage problems.

To ease the issue, the FDA has temporarily allowed shipments from India of some of the drugs. The FDA said that it will give permission to such imports on occasions when the shortage of drugs is critical and no suitable alternatives are available. The FDA has also approved the production of Methotrexate by a new manufacturer.

Some hospitals recently received a supply of Methotrexate after the Ben Venue plant was allowed to release an existing batch of the drug by the FDA. Though the supply is enough to manage the treatment of patients for the next few weeks, it is still unclear when the next batch of Methotrexate will arrive so that the treatment can be continued without interruption.

To help patients in this difficult situation, our medical website, Emedoutlet, has taken up an initiative to supply Methotrexate, free of cost, in 20 ml vials (500 mg) per patient till the 15th of April. Patients can benefit from this facility provided they have a valid prescription for this drug, from their doctor.
