Generic Doxycycline is a semi-synthetic tetracycline formulation, with a broad spectrum of activities against various bacterial infections that occur in dogs and cats.

Vets often prefer to treat dogs and cats that have a bacterial infection, with Doxycycline, as it is the most effective antibiotic for them.
Doxycycline is an oral medicine, given according to the weight of the animal; it can be taken regardless of food. To reduce nausea, the medicine can be mixed with the food and then fed to the pet. Give plenty of water to your pet. Ask the vet about the diet to be given.

Doxycycline For Dogs : The dose commonly prescribed is 2mg-5mg/lb, once or twice a day.
Doxycycline For Cats : Tt is usually 2mg/lb, given twice daily.

Give the medicine as prescribed by the vet – do not increase, decrease, or stop the medicine on your own. Once begun, it is better to complete the full course of the antibiotic, otherwise the infection may return.

If you are giving 2 doses of this medicine to your pet, and forget to give one dose, you can give the missed dose to the pet if there is plenty of time left for the second dose; otherwise, leave the missed dose and go on to the next one.

If a single dose is being given to your pet, you can give it as soon as you remember. However, antibiotics work best, when a regular amount of the medicine stays in the bloodstream, so try to give the medicine regularly.

An overdose of this drug can result in vomiting, diarrhea, or anorexia, when your pet may refuse food. If any of these symptoms get worse, or bothersome, contact the vet at once. You may contact the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435, or Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680 that offers a 24-hour helpline service. These services are chargeable.
Doxycycline medicine should be stored at a room temperature between 15oC-30oC, away from heat, light and dampness. The oral suspension, when stored at room temperature, should be used within a fortnight.
Doxycycline interacts with the following:-

Pencillins.

Cephalosporins.

Aminoglycosides.

Anticoagulants such as, Warfarin.

Saline cathartics [given to empty out the bowels].

Oral antacids, or anti-diarrheals or other medicines given to treat other diseases of the gastro-intestinal [GI] tract that contain zinc, magnesium, aluminium, calcium, and bismuth cations.



It is recommended that oral tetracycline s should be given 2 hours before or after antacids or any other drug used for GI treatment, or before administering any vitamin-mineral-iron-bismuth supplements to them.

Antibiotics of the tetracycline family are said to affect urine reports, so if you take your pet to the lab for a urine test, let the lab technician or vet know that your pet is on Doxycycline therapy.
Most often, the side effects reported by administration of this drug to dogs, or cats, are:-

Nausea.

Vomiting.

Loss of appetite.



Should your pet develop diarrhea or have bloody stools, an allergic skin rash, have difficulty in breathing, urinate less than normal, or pass dark colored urine, or show any other unusual symptom or behavior while on Doxycycline therapy, then you must take it to the vet at once.

Inform the veterinary doctor if your pet has a liver or kidney problem.

It is recommended that this drug should not be given to pregnant or nursing animals, particularly in the initial months of pregnancy when the fetus is developing, as the tetracycline group of antibiotics are capable of retarding the skeletal structure of the fetus, and may cause yellowing of teeth in the unborn pup or kitten. It can be given in the latter half, if the vet considers this to be safe.

Caution has to be used when giving this medicine to small animals.

The tablet formulation has been found, at times, to cause injury to the esophagus in cats.

As the Tetracycline group of antibiotics discolor deciduous teeth, puppies or kittens are usually not given Doxycyline.

Usage of expired Doxycycline can seriously impair the kidneys of your pet, so safely discard the medicine when it is no longer required.

Take care that your pet is not exposed to sunlight as this drug may make it more sensitive to sunlight or strong lights, and give it a sunburned skin.
