The Process of Sperm Donation

Now women do not need to sacrifice their dream to become mothers even if their husband has some problem. Women still can become pregnant and ultimately mothers with the help of donated sperm.  Sperm donation has become a blessing for those families in which children have brought meaning to their parents’ life. Sperm donation is done with lots of care and caution.
The donor has to go through a step by step procedure to donate his sperms. Only 5 % of the total applicants who wish to donate their sperm get through the entire process to become eligible for sperm donation.
•    Before you apply:
The first step before you apply for sperm donation is that you need to be excluded from the list of disqualifying parameters as follows:
•    Age less than 18 and more than 40 years
•    Heredity of serious diseases e.g. sickle cell anemia
•    Homosexual men
•    Intravenous drug users
•    Visited any AIDS related areas
If any applicant is found positive in even a single one of the above mentioned parameters he is disqualified for donating sperm.
•    Interview and personal screening:
After clearing the very first step, now the applicant needs to go through a personal interview. In this interview he may get asked about his family background, sexual behavior and the reason for donating sperms. His extensive family information is collected for evaluation purpose.
•    Sample testing:
After an interview the applicant gets asked to provide a sample of semen for various tests such as – sperm count, sperm motility, sperm morphology etc. After doing all these tests if the semen is found to be eligible for donation then the applicant is asked to move on to the next step.
•    Blood tests:
Now the applicant has to go through blood tests to check for infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B or C etc. If the applicant is found to have any such conditions then he cannot donate his sperm. It is important for him to have his blood infection free.
•    Sperm donation:
If he is in the lucky 5% by clearing all these steps, then he can now donate his sperms. Now he gets asked to walk into the private room which is generally full of pornography and then he masturbates into the given sterile container. And after processing it is sealed in vials and frozen in liquid nitrogen. And this semen sample is given to those who come to ask for it.
•    Compensation:
Each sperm donor gets monetary compensation for donating his sperm. It may be between $40 and $100. One applicant can give a maximum of 10 semen samples.
To complete this entire procedure it takes approximately 2 to 6 months depending on which sperm bank the applicant is applying in.
After donating sperm the donor has no legal right or connection with the resulting children. He can permit the resulting children to get in touch with him only after they complete 18 years of age.
